The emblem on the left was first used by the Army Air Force. It was later used as a shoulder patch by the new United States Air Force. The new USAF sometimes wore it on the left shoulder of fatigue jackets with an arc patch designating the command directly above it.

The blue sky represents Air Force Operations. The arm and armor is a symbol of strength, power, and loyalty. The olive branch, a symbol of peace, and the lightning flashes, symbols of speed and power, were qualities underlying the missions of the Strategic Air Command.

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE

Memories of Bellevue and Fort Crook by Merritt Scharnweber

We used to live on Burt Murphy Boulevard over in Bellevue. This was during the Second War. Dad had quit his telephone job at Mitchell, South Dakota and moved us all down there so he could work there in the Glenn L. Martin plant building the B-26 Marauder and later the B-29. He worked on the instrument panels. He was on the late shift and walked to work. The Army Air Force also had a big modification plant there so we got to see all kinds of aircraft. I remember that at one time I knew what a plane was just by the sound before you saw it.

One of the gates to get on base was just a little ways from the hill that we lived on and the NE to SW runway ended there at the NE end. The B-26s would taxi down there and then sit and rev up their motors for the longest time. When the planes took off towards the northeast, they went right over Bellevue and the school that I went to. Mom could watch them from the kitchen window which was on the back side of the house as the front of the house faced west. One day she happened to glance out and a B-25 was taking off past the window with the left engine on fire and smoking badly. The pilot banked towards the northwest to try and land on the NW to SE runway, but the bad engine pulled him down and he landed on one of the plant buildings. This was at the noon hour so there was few workers in the building. The crew didn't make it.

There were a lot of B-25s around there as that 75mm cannon was installed there.
